DS Jo Hansen – Bolton

Every now and again, I turn back to the Bonning-Wallace case when time permits. David Alexander has been out of prison for some time now, and the heat on finding the person that paid Roberts has died away; the trail is cold.

Having just finished my shower after my daily five-mile run and whilst my laptop is booting up, I pull the prepared smoothie from my fridge and pop a croissant on the toasting rack above my toaster. Sitting at my small breakfast bar, I look around at my new apartment, not much, but clean and tidy and it suits my new solitary needs now after my ex decided to work in the US. I didn’t think we’d last long together with the Atlantic between us, and unfortunately, I was right. It was fun while it lasted.

I know I shouldn’t have the archive box of evidence, trial records and notes for the Roberts case here at home, but as I’m using my personal time to look into this, I’m not spending my Sunday driving across town to have it to hand. It is noticeable that there is less and less paperwork these days, more CDs, pen drives and plug-in hard drives, coupled with secure online cloud storage. I suppose the one archive box is far better than lugging four or five boxes around like we used to, and it’s far easier to search through content quickly now.

Given the number of times I’ve been through this material and still, nothing new comes to light, I’m beginning to think it’s bordering on the obsessive, something I’ve been told is an excellent quality and destructive trait in equal measure, as a person looking at the same information expecting it to change can often miss the bigger picture, miss the obvious that’s right in front of them.

The small bundle of CDs is held together with rubber bands. I put them to one side and look at the records index folder; again, I don’t know why; I can almost recite this verbatim. The photo log list is attached, and as I read through it again, nothing new has mysteriously been added since I last looked at it; why would I think it had?

It’s just coincidences; I don’t like them, never have. I get that there can be everyday coincidences like two people wearing the same outfit to the same wedding, but that’s more probability and easily explainable. But two violent deaths with a link to the same couple ...?

My mobile rings; I should think of changing that ringtone, ‘You don’t own me’ doesn’t sit well with some of the guys at the station who are not keen on independent women. I press the green button, ‘Hi Boss, what’s up?’

‘Sorry to call you on a Sunday morning Jo, but we’ve had two suspicious deaths in the early hours, and we’re a bit stretched; any chance you could be SIO on one of them?’

‘Wow, me? Senior Investigative Officer, er sure Boss. You think I’m
